Our Lady of Joy

Painting the Soul

If art imparts to us a conception of the world, it is primarily a language which is expressed visually. To comprehend it demands an understading of both its vocabulary and its syntax. More than just a work of art, the icon calls for an art form permitting the transition from the visible to the invisible. Its highly refined structures permit just that; to ignore them would be to deprive oneself of the elements essential for reading the image. To fully understand the icon, then, one must necessarily comprehend its organic unity: artistic, spiritual, theological. Michel Quenot, "The Icon, Window on the Kingdom."
