Pietà is an Italian word that means pity, compassion, and sorrow.
It is associated with works of art portraying the Virgin Mary holding and mourning over the dead body of Christ (mostly known from Michelangelo's famous marble Pieta in the Vatican).
The scene of Pietà was formed after the Deposition from the Cross and the Lamentation over the Dead Christ.
The theme is not found in any liturgical text. It was described with great passion and drama by visionaries, and sculptors during the second part of the fourteenth century.
The above icon is a combination of Byzantine and Western art. An angel is holding the dead body of Christ.
Any reproduction of the icon without the artist authorization is prohibited
